A friend of mine posted something about catcalling and street harassment. To the absolute shock of … well, pretty much nobody, the very first comment on her post was a guy explaining why women shouldn’t be afraid of catcalling, and isn’t it funny how the women complaining aren’t the ones experiencing the “privilege” of being catcalled in the first place? Also, women wouldn’t be afraid if they carried guns, and the real threat are guys “in a dark van with no windows parked next to your car in the Walmart parking lot.”

His suggestion? “Now what would happen if a woman who’s the center of the cat call took the power back, walked up to the offending rake and asked for his number and told him to show a little respect and maybe if he was lucky she’d let him earn the opportunity to do some real cat calling?”

This is the point where I facepalmed so hard I gave myself a concussion.

Guys, is it really that hard to shut the hell up and listen instead of immediately trying to tell women why they’re wrong about their own lives and experiences?

It’s pathetically predictable.

  1. Woman complains about harassment.

  2. Dudebro feels uncomfortable.

  3. Dudebro tells woman why she’s wrong to feel that way.

Because Dudebro’s discomfort at women complaining about harassment is somehow more important and valid than women’s discomfort about actually being harassed.

The CDC put out a report this year about sexual violence, after completing more than 12,000 interviews. They found that one in five women have been raped in their lifetimes, and 99% of those rapes were committed by men. (The report states that about two percent of men were raped as well, which I strongly suspect is an underestimate. They also found that approximately 80% of those rapes were also committed by men.)

“But I’m not like those other men,” says Dudebro, waving the “Not All Men” flag with righteous pride.

Then stop acting like them.

  • When a woman says she’s uncomfortable with something and wants you to knock it off, stop arguing. Stop telling her she’s wrong, and stop making excuses to keep doing it.

  • Stop pretending it’s about complimenting women. (Here’s a tip: Compliments don’t go from, “Hey baby” to “Fuck you, you stuck-up bitch” in the blink of an eye.)

  • Stop treating women as objects you’re entitled to instead of people.

You seriously want women to believe you’re not an asshole and a potential threat? Start by shutting up for a minute and actually listening to what women are saying.

They did the thing. I can't believe they actually did. the thing. HOLY SHIT. I AM BEYOND HAPPY. Avatar's ending was so disappointing, and Korra began so shaky with its irritating love triangle bullshit, but OH MY FUCKING AANG!

IT'S CANON.

THE ONLY OTHER SHIP I LOVE MORE THAN KORRA x IROH AND THEY MADE IT CANON.

I CAN DIE HAPPY.

Originally posted by jimhines at Rape, Abuse, and Marion Zimmer Bradley

My very first rejection letter was from Marion Zimmer Bradley. It was both harsh and helpful. So I was thrilled when, years later, I made one of my first professional sales to Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Fantasy Magazine. I was even happier when I sold a story to her anthology Sword & Sorceress XXI.

I’m proud of those stories. I believe the Sword & Sorceress series was important, and I’m grateful to Bradley for creating it. I believe her magazine helped a lot of new writers, and her books helped countless readers. All of which makes the revelations about Marion Zimmer Bradley protecting a known child rapist and molesting her own daughter and others even more tragic.

Here are some of the relevant links.

  • Marion Zimmer Bradley’s testimony in defense of her husband, Walter Breen, a convicted pedophile.

  • A blog post from Deirdre Saoirse Moen, in which Moira Greyland, daughter of Marion Zimmer Bradley and Walter Breen, states that Bradley molested her starting when she was three years old and continuing until Greyland was twelve and able to walk away. Greyland also describes Breen as “a serial rapist with many, many victims,” but says Marion “was far, far worse.”

  • The “Breendoggle” Wiki. Much of fandom seemed to know about the allegations against Breen. The documentation includes eyewitness accounts of Breen molesting children and discussion that even if Breen was indeed an active pedophile, that doesn’t mean he should be expelled from fandom.

  • Silence is Complicity. Natalie Luhrs talks about Breen, MZB, and the damage done by prioritizing silence over safety, complicity over acting to protect the vulnerable members of our community.

  • On Doing a Thing I Needed to Do. Janni Lee Simner talks about having written for some of MZB’s projects, and her choice to donate her income from those sales to RAINN.

There’s more out there, including people defending MZB, as well as people insisting we must “separate the art from the artist” and not let MZB’s “alleged” crimes detract from the good she’s done. And there’s the argument that since MZB died fifteen years ago, there’s no point to bringing up all of this ugliness and smearing the name of a celebrated author.

I disagree.

To begin with, while Bradley and Breen are both gone from this world, their victims survive. The damage they inflicted lives on. Are you going to tell victims of rape/abuse that nobody’s allowed to acknowledge what was done to them? That the need to protect the reputation of the dead is more important than allowing victims their voice? To hell with that.

Second, as Luhrs and others have pointed out, many of the same behaviors that allowed this abuse to continue for so long are still present in fandom and elsewhere today. We excuse sexual harassment as social awkwardness. We ignore ongoing harassment and assault for years or decades because someone happens to be a big name author or editor. Half of fandom shirks from the mere thought of excluding known predators, because for some, sexual harassment and assault are lesser crimes than shunning a predator from a convention.

I’m not going to say that people should or shouldn’t throw all of MZB’s books away. There are authors whose careers might not have happened without MZB’s help, and our genre is better for many of them. But it’s also important to acknowledge that predators exist. They may be in positions of power and influence. Sometimes, they’re people who have done good work for a community. They often have very smooth, well-practiced tactics for defending or excusing their actions.

When we ignore ongoing harassment and abuse, when we belittle efforts to create harassment policies, when we respond to people speaking out about their own abuse and harassment by accusing them of starting “lynch mobs” and “witch hunts,” we’re teaching predators that fandom is a safe hunting ground. We’re teaching them that they will be protected, and their victims will be sacrificed so we can cling to an illusion of inclusiveness.

We need to work on teaching a different lesson.

In a meditite/pancham/riolu fighting safari, hoping for a shiny Riolu of my own and not a traded one, when shiny Pancham♂ appeared! Luxury Ball. Adamant (+Attack -Sp.Atk). Scrappy this time, which is awesome. Mischievous.

In a togepi/swirlix/yellow floette fairy safari that gave me a shiny Floette, hoping to get a shiny swirlix... when another shiny yellow Floette♀ appeared. Luxury Ball. Docile—neutral, yay! Symbiosis. Takes plenty of siestas.

In the snorunt/beartic/lapras ice safari that's given me 2 shiny beartics, and a shiny Snorunt♂ finally appeared! It's male, so I caught it in a Luxury Ball to match when it evolves into a Glalie. Premier Ball would've been okay too, but Luxury Ball is always my first choice. Hasty (+Speed -Defense). Moody. Somewhat vain.

Trying for another shiny eevee in a teddiursa/minccino/eevee normal safari when shiny Minccino♀ appeared! Premier Ball. Jolly (+Speed -Sp.Atk). Technician, which I like. Takes plenty of siestas.

Back in the meditite/pancham/riolu safari, thinking I'll get either a shiny meditite or riolu this time, when my 3rd shiny Pancham♂ appeared. Luxury Ball. Impish (+Defense -Sp.Atk). Scrappy again, yay! Capable of taking hits.

Still searching for a shiny Lapras or shiny Snorunt, and the ice safari gave me another shiny Beartic♂. Another Premiere Ball. Hardy, neutral yay. Swift Swim. Likes to thrash about.

In the dragon safari that gave me my first shiny Sliggoo, shiny Shelgon♂ appeared! It was pretty tough. Paralyzed, caught it on the 10th Nest Ball in a critical capture. Naive (+Speed -Sp.Def). Overcoat. Mischievous.

Went back to search for a shiny Klefki and finally found one. It's gold! Female. Thunder Wave to paralyze, I caught it on the 2nd Luxury Ball. Lonely (+Attack -Defense). Magician. Mischievous.

Went back to a dragon safari because dragons are my favourite. 2 shiny Noibats, 3 shiny Fraxures... and it finally gave me a shiny Sliggoo♂! Thunder Wave to paralyze. It used Rain Dance, and my heart sunk. The last time a shiny Sliggoo did that, it kept curing itself with Hydration. But nothing happened. Woohoo, even though there's still a chance it has Sap Sipper. Threw Heal Ball. Nope. Another one. Nope. Another one. Three shakes, captured. Naive (+Speed -Sp.Def). Gooey! YAAAAAAAAAAY!!! Finally!!! Capable of taking hits.

Fairy Safari, still hoping for a shiny Swirlix when shiny yellow Floette♀ appeared! Paralyzed, I caught it on the first Nest Ball. Lax (+Defense -Sp.Def). Symbiosis. Takes plenty of siestas.

My search for a shiny Inkay finally came to an end. A shiny female appeared! Paralyzed, caught it on the 2nd Luxury Ball. Bold (+Defense -Attack). Infiltrator, which I wanted but Suction Cups would've been fine, too. Takes plenty of siestas.

Went back to my lucky patch on Route 5 to search for that elusive black poodle... but found a shiny Skiddo instead. Female this time. Serious—neutral, yay. Sap Sipper again. Likes to run.

In a ferroseed/forretress/klefki steel safari hoping for a shiny Klefki when shiny Ferrosseed appeared. Thunder Wave. Threw Dive Ball to match the blue spikes. Three shakes, captured. Lax (+Defense +Sp.Def). Iron Barbs. Alert to sounds.

Back at the fraxure/noibat/sliggoo dragon safari that's given me 2 shiny fraxures♂, 2 shiny noibats and 1 shiny sliggoo, hoping for another shiny sliggoo, when shiny Fraxure♀ appeared. Thunder Wave. Threw Luxury Ball. Three shakes, captured. Hasty (+Speed -Defense). Mold Breaker. Alert to sounds.

Went to a kirlia/spritzee/floette fairy safari hoping for a shiny Kirlia. A few encounters in, shiny Kirlia♀ appeared! I came prepared this time! Switched in shiny Wobbuffet♀ with Shadow Tag ability. Good thing, too! Shiny Kirlia♀ attempted to Teleport, but failed. Threw Dive Ball to match the blue and white. Three shakes, captured. Lax (+Defense -Sp.Def). Synchronize. Somewhat vain.

Went to a snorunt/beartic/lapras ice safari hoping for either a shiny snorunt or lapras, so of course I'm gonna get a shiny Beartic instead. XD Thunder Wave. Threw Premiere Ball to match the white. Three shakes, captured. Male. Relaxed (+Defense -Speed). Snow Cloak. Mischievous. Another shiny that doesn't look that impressive. Only its paws and claws are a different shade; purple-ish instead of dark gray.

Will eventually go back to that ice safari. Shiny Froslass and shiny Glalie aren't that impressive either, but they're cute. Also have a couple of traded shiny Lapras with Shell Armor, which I prefer over Water Absorb, but one of my own would be nice. I'm greedy. XD
